Naval Station Ingleside Project (NSI)

Also known as: "The North American Coastal Wind Energy Technology Development & Testing Center"
In 2005, the decision was made to close the U.S. Navy base located at Ingleside, TX (near Corpus Christi). Naval Station Ingleside (NSI) was designated for closure under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Act. The base will officially close September 2010 and the 576-acre naval station will revert back to the Port of Corpus Christi Authority (POCCA). In April 2009, POCCA entered into an agreement with the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) to create a partnership in which TAMUS became the Master Developer for the redevelopment of NSI. The base, plus 433 acres owned by the Port, will be redeveloped to become a major renewable energy research and training center through a collaboration led by the TAMU System. With a vision to revolutionize the energy and technology industry sectors, TAMUS and POCCA have joined forces to re-establish and expand a dynamic, knowledge-based work force in the Coastal Bend region. The Wind Alliance will be a partner in the redevelopment collaboration. In August 2009, members of The Wind Alliance toured Naval Station Ingleside to explore opportunities.
Port Chairman Ruben Bonilla has stated that, “This partnership has global implications in that it offers us the opportunity to talk about infrastructure, development of intellectual growth, not only for the Coastal Bend and the state, but for the country and beyond.”
NSI currently encompasses 576 acres with more than 70 state-of-the-art buildings, including; 23 dorm room buildings, fitness and recreation facilities, a capital-class, 1,500-foot pier and wharf area, and a 200-seat auditorium. POCCA has also included 433 acres of unimproved green space bordering the base to be incorporated in the Ingleside Development Project to help attract new investment. The Ingleside Development Project is a master-planned, technology-focused business park and provides first-class office and R&D space, light industrial and/or warehouse space with little to no upfront infrastructure cost needed. In addition, the existing capital-class pier and wharf area at NSI allows maritime industries to take advantage of a secure, world-class operation with direct access to deep ocean waters and the Gulf of Mexico.
Strategically located on the coastal bend of Texas, the Ingleside Development Project is easily accessible by statewide industry and university research partners and provides an ideal location for technology development of renewable energy resources such as: on and off-shore wind in a coastal and marine environment, algae biofuels, wave energy.
