February 24thThe event kicked-off with back-to-back meetings for our three committees: Technology, Infrastructure, and Workforce. Each committee identified specific initiatives to advance during the next few months. Dinner was held at the lovely Corpus Christi Town Club. Jerry Patterson, Texas Land Commissioner, spoke to our members about the efforts Texas has made to promote wind development. The evening concluded with a night cap at The Republic of Texas atop the Omni Bayfront Hotel, hosted by The Wind Alliance. F
ebruary 25thThursday began with breakfast at the Omni Bayfront Hotel where members watched our new video and heard presentations from John White, Managing Director of The Wind Alliance, and Mark M. Ellison, Associate Vice Chancellor of Texas A&M University System, and were welcomed by John Valls of the Port of Corpus Christi Authority. Following breakfast, our members took a guided tour of Naval Station Ingleside, which will be redeveloped in the next few months into a state of the art renewable energy and technology innovation hub. The Naval Station hosted the remainder of the meeting. Below is a summary of our speakers and topics:

John White, Managing Director of The Wind Alliance, provided opening comments and was the master of ceremonies.

Lisa Dodds, Business Development Manager at the UK’s New and Renewable Energy Centre (NAREC), discussed the successful model they have used to leverage government resources to build an extensive and innovative research, development and testing facility for all types of renewables.

Brian Connor, Energy Technology Specialist at Department of Energy (DoE), discussed the current state of funding and priorities for the DoE Wind Program. Brian gave members insight into the kinds of projects that DoE is looking for as well as the types of partnership and collaborations that will aid successful awards for these projects.

Brief committee updates were provided to the general assembly by our committee chairs and co-chairs.

John Pappas, Business Development Manager for the Center for Electromechanics for the University of Texas, and Claire Henkhaus, Associate Director for The Wind Alliance, led a productive brainstorming session that helped our members zero-in on short and long term goals.

Barry Butler, Dean of the College of Engineering at The University of Iowa, discussed how the state of Iowa has been successful at promoting wind on all levels - from academic to industry recruitment. Iowa has taken steps to align community college goals and graduates with paths directly to industry as well as to four-year degrees. Additionally, they have advertised their manufacturing and transportation attributes to attract valuable industry players that further boost academic opportunities within the state.

Skip Mills, Director of the Texas Center for Applied Technology within the Texas A&M University System, discussed plans for the Naval Station Ingleside redevelopment project.
