In order to contribute to the University's dedication to excellence, the College has a vision of attaining national recognition as a metropolitan-based college of engineering with strong undergraduate and graduate degree programs, major collaborative efforts with industry, and a respected research program.
The College of Engineering is engaged in research and development for sustainable sources of energy that draws from the advances in technology from the aerospace industry and the expertise of aerospace and power systems researchers (Wichita Kansas is home to Spirit Aerosystems, Hawker Beechcraft, Cessna, and Lear Jet). Research is funded through a Department of Energy award. It supports eleven faculty and eleven post docs and students. This effort aims to reduce the operational costs of wind energy systems through effective integration into the power grid, improved reliability and maintainability of turbine blades and nacels, and extended turbine life through new materials and coatings. The project also seeks to improve the environmental performance of wind energy systems through life-cycle analysis.
